Last week, our Lunada Bay Homeowners Association (LBHOA) Board member, Dwight Abbott, passed away unexpectedly. We have had the privilege of having Dwight on our Board since 2013, and in the decade that I’ve been with the LBHOA it’s been a true pleasure to get to know him. Simply put, to know Dwight was to love him. I’ll always remember his strong sense of community, his generosity with time and knowledge, his infectious optimism, his great sense of humor, and of course, his love for a good glass of red wine.
At 88 years young, Dwight was still sharp as a tack—traveling frequently with his wife to visit their children and beloved grandchildren. He was always prepared with several agenda items at each meeting, and he was passionately committed to making sure the gophers didn’t destroy the landscaping at the Lunada Bay Fountain—and he was winning that battle!
Dwight’s smile, optimism, constant encouragement and openness to learning were contagious. When reflecting on Dwight’s legacy over the past week with board members, a few words kept coming up: selfless, intelligent, warm, community-driven, respected, and—always—a true gentleman. I know he would be proud to be remembered in this way.
During his time with the LBHOA, Dwight made countless contributions. He was an early advocate for the development of Lunada Bay Plaza Park, where we now host our Summer Concert Series and Santa in the Park. He helped fine-tune the Pumpkin Races, contributed to various LB landscaping projects and maintenance efforts, took great photos and offered invaluable feedback on how to improve our events. He consistently brought new opportunities to the table, many of which we will be rolling out in the coming year.
Beyond the LBHOA, Dwight was deeply involved in his community. He served on the Board of the Palos Verdes Historical Society, was a past City Council member (2003-2007) and Mayor (2005), and participated in the Disaster Response Program for both Lunada Bay and Palos Verdes Estates. Giving back to his community brought him immense joy.
Dwight leaves behind his loving wife, Jan, two sons, and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 22nd at 9:00am at Green Hills in RPV. All are welcome.
The LBHOA and its board members are better for having known him. We will miss him dearly, keep him in our hearts, and always remember the kindness he shared with everyone he met.
Warm Regards,
President, Lunada Bay Homeowners Association
