On October 16, many of us were buoyed when Governor Jerry Brown vetoed State Senate Bill 649. SB 649 would have restricted local government oversight of telecommunication small cell wireless equipment and limited city government ability to charge for use of government owned infrastructure.
This bill was strongly opposed by local city governments, including Palos Verdes Estates, which is particularly interested in maintaining the local aesthetics. In his veto, Governor Brown stated that “the interest which localities have in managing rights of way requires a more balanced solution than the one achieved in this bill.”
Having failed at the local level, the wireless industry is turning to the federal government in an effort to legislate restrictions on localities.
