New Paths and Plants Enhance Quiet Walks
Continuing a longstanding tradition, LBHOA has improved beautiful new pathways which are being used every day by local moms, dads, retirees, students, visitors and families right here in Lunada Bay. Decomposed granite has replaced dust and mud along sections of the paths adjacent to Lunada Bay Elementary School.
The Lunada Bay Homeowners Association initiated the Beautify Lunada Bay (BLB) Project in 2014 to restore the habitat and improve the appearance of public areas. Phase 1 of the project began in late 2017, as dozens of volunteers, ranging from science students to senior citizens, laid the groundwork for new pathways on the north side of Lunada Canyon.
The first half of Phase 1 broke ground early in 2018 with installation of the pathway and native plants on the north side of Lunada Canyon. Work on the second half began in March and was completed in the Summer of 2018.
The design for Phase 1 of the Beautify Lunada Bay project was developed following several meetings with local residents and City officials beginning in 2014. The final design included a demonstration area and outdoor classroom on a one-acre site across from Lunada Bay Elementary School (see photo). Plans were developed in collaboration with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (PVPLC), a local nonprofit organization that grows native plants and restores open space on the Peninsula. The City of Palos Verdes Estates gave its enthusiastic support in 2017 with unanimous votes of approval from both the Parklands Committee and the City Council. The City also provided boulders and stones to line the paths, mulch, and water for three years.
The BLB project is funded entirely by residents and grants. You can help us continue the outdoor classroom phase by donating today. Donations can be designated “for the BLB Project” at the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy’s website.
Plans for Phase 2 of the Beautify Lunada Bay project will be presented before the City’s Parklands committee in March, 2020.
